TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Data center discussions are continuing in Leon County, with county commissioners expected to take up the issue again at their meeting next Tuesday.
Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban says commissioners will consider a proposed one-year moratorium on data centers. Caban says the county’s comprehensive plan currently does not define what a data center is.
He says commissioners will discuss adding definitions for both data centers and large-scale data centers, as well as what a one-year moratorium would look like. Caban adds that, as of now, a large-scale data center cannot be proposed in Leon County because it is not defined in the county’s comprehensive plan.
“I do intend to fully propose and support a one-year moratorium, and I think it’s needed. I also think we need to define what a data center means in our comp plan so that way it is defined and someone can’t come in and be sneaky and build something that is not properly defined in our current code,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban.

Other items on the agenda for next week include a film and television incentive program to entice productions to Leon County. It proposes a three-year program, with $125,000 set aside each year to give to projects filmed here.
The incentive would only be paid out after filming was done, and there is confirmation the project would be distributed to TV and media platforms.
Commissioners are also planning to push back on a land annexation near Lake Jackson. Jeffrey Phipps, a Tallahassee landowner, filed for the voluntary annexation of 1,700 acres of rural Leon County into city limits.
The property is on North Meridian Road near Lake Jackson. County commissioners rejected Phipps’ development efforts last year, and it’s faced pushback from citizens over environmental concerns. This current effort would put the property inside city limits and subject it to city decisions on development.
City commissioners voted to consider the request, and county leaders now plan to formally object to it.
The Leon County Commission will meet next Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Leon County Courthouse.
