TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — As the 2026 Primary Election in Florida quickly approaches, so comes the deadline for eligible voters to register.
Here are upcoming deadlines for the Primary Election:
Deadline to send vote-by-mail ballots to domestic voters: July 9 —16
Deadline to register to vote or change party affiliation: July 20
Deadline to request that ballot be mailed: August 6
Early voting period (mandatory period): August 8 — 15
A primary election allows voters to nominate party nominees for the general election to fill a national, state, county or district office. It is typically held 11 weeks before the general election.
Florida is a closed primary state, meaning that only registered members of political parties can vote for their respective party candidates in primary elections.
However, the 2026 election will also include nonpartisan contests that those unaffiliated with a party can vote in.
According to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections, there will be three ballots in the upcoming election: Republican, Democratic, and nonpartisan. Nonpartisan judicial and School Board races will be on all ballots.
Ballots in State Senate District 16, State House District 62, and State House District 63 will have a Universal Primary Contest, meaning all candidates for a seat have the same party affiliation and would be unopposed in the General elections.
