St. Petersburg, FL – A new national report evaluating driver safety found that motorists in St. Petersburg are among the safest in the country, while Tampa slipped in the latest annual rankings.
According to Allstate’s 2026 America’s Best Drivers Report, St. Petersburg ranked 26th among the nation’s 200 largest cities, making it one of Florida’s highest ranked cities for driving safety.
Tampa placed 87th, dropping 19 positions from last year’s report after seeing a decline in its overall safety ranking.
The annual study analyzes auto insurance claims to estimate how frequently drivers are involved in collisions.
The 2026 report is based on property damage claims collected between January 2023 and December 2024 and compares the average number of years between crashes for drivers in each city.
Allstate estimates that drivers in St. Petersburg go considerably longer between collisions than the national average, contributing to the city’s strong performance.
Tampa’s lower ranking indicates drivers there are involved in crashes more frequently than in previous years, although the city still ranked within the top half of the 200 cities included in the study.
The report is designed to identify long term driving trends and does not determine individual insurance premiums or predict a driver’s personal risk of being involved in a collision.
Nationally, Brownsville, Texas, earned the top ranking for the second consecutive year, with drivers averaging nearly 15 years between collisions.
Boston ranked last on the list, with drivers averaging fewer than four years between crashes.
Allstate said factors such as speeding, distracted driving, hard braking and driving after dark can increase the likelihood of crashes regardless of where motorists live, highlighting the continued importance of safe driving habits.
