EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU)- Day 2 of the MLB draft was a banner day for the Chippewa Valley. A pair of Eau Claire natives heard their names called by teams Sunday, as both Regis alum Cole Selvig and Eau Claire Memorial alum Dylan O’Connell were selected.
Cole Selvig-Pitcher
Selvig was selected in the 6th round of the MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins.
The Eau Claire Regis alum has spent the past two seasons with the Minnesota Gophers. Before that he spent a season with the Texas Longhorns.
This past year, Selvig went 5-4, with a 5.21 ERA in 14 starts for the Gophers. He struck out 58 batters in 67.1 innings pitched.
He spent the 2024 summer with the Eau Claire Express, posting a 4-1 record with 4.70 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
Before heading to the collegiate ranks, Selvig was a standout at Eau Claire Regis, helping the squad to the 2022 WIAA State Championship.
According to scouting website Perfectgame.org , Selvig has a fastball in the mid-90’s and also throws a slider and cutter.
Dylan O’Connell-Outfielder
O’Connell was taken in the 15th round by the Athletics.
The Eau Claire Memorial alum has bounced around since leaving Eau Claire in 2022. Originally committed to St. Thomas University, O’Connell played one season there before spending 2024 and 2025 at Western Kentucky. This past year, he was an integral part of the UW-Milwaukee team that made a run in the College World Series, hitting for a .340 average with 72 hits, 8 home runs and 46 RBIs.
He announced that he would be transferring to the University of Minnesota in June.
O’Connell also spent the 2023 and part of the 2024 season with the Express, hitting .343 with 8 homers and 55 RBIs in his first season to earn Northwoods League All-Star honors.
Before his collegiate career, O’Connell was a star for Eau Claire Memorial, helping them to a 2021 state semifinals appearance.
