DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Law enforcement agencies around the Southeast are focusing on speeders this week.
Officials Operation Southern Slow Down at a conference held Monday at the Daytona International Speedway.
“Speed on the track is thrilling and controlled, but speed on the roads is dangerous and unpredictable,” said Speedway President Frank Kelleher.
FDOT, Florida Highway Patrol, and local law enforcement are partnering up to increase enforcement and public education of speeding laws. Agencies in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee are also joining the effort to slow down speeders.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods says there have been more than 2,700 car crashes and 37 deaths in his region already this year.
“A good majority of these are due to speed,” he said.
The Tampa Police Department, on X, said “The fastest way to get where you’re going is to slow down, respect the speed limit, and look out for others.”
The operation includes local roads and major interstates. Operation Southern Slow Down ends Friday July 18.
