A family vacation to Central Florida ended in tragedy Sunday when a 2-year-old Georgia boy was accidentally shot and killed after another young child found an unsecured firearm inside a vehicle at a Kissimmee vacation rental community, authorities said.The shooting happened around 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cove East at Storey Lake rental community at the 2600 block of Scrapbook Street, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.Investigators said two families had just arrived at the rental property and were outside the vehicle when the shooting occurred. A 4-year-old child and the 2-year-old were inside the vehicle. “According to the investigation, a 4-year-old family member located an unsecured firearm inside of the vehicle and discharged it, striking the 2-year-old that was also inside the vehicle,” Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said.The homicide unit was called to the scene as well as the Department of Children and Families.The child was taken to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The shooting has renewed calls from gun safety advocates for responsible firearm storage.”It’s a painful reminder that secure firearm storage can save lives,” said Wendy Tenn with Everytown for Gun Safety.According to Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 146 unintentional shootings by children in the United States this year, resulting in 49 deaths.”What needs to happen is a cultural shift,” Tenn said. “Tragedies like this happen every day across the country, and it won’t change unless we help shape behavior change and normalize responsible gun ownership.”Blackmon urged gun owners to keep firearms secured and out of children’s reach.”It’s literally laying out by itself, so it’s easy to grab,” Blackmon said. “You pull the trigger, and you can’t recall that. It’s not a video game. You can’t hit reset and start over. Once you pull that trigger, that projectile is going somewhere.”The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting. Authorities have not identified who owned the firearm. The sheriff’s office said charges are possible. Last month, twin 4-year-old girls drowned in a pool at a rental home in Kissimmee.
