TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — As Florida’s congressional and state elections begin to heat up, both Democrats and Republicans are mapping out their path to victory.

Each party says they are confident heading into November, but the question is whether Republicans can hold on to their super-majority in Tallahassee.

“The Republican super-majority in this legislature is breakable, and we are going to break it this cycle,” said Nikki Fried, Chair of the Florida Democratic Party.

Democrats say momentum from recent special election victories like state senator Brian Nathan right here in the Bay Area, could help them cut into the GOP’s advantage.

“There is a significant amount of seats, both in the legislature, both in the house and the senate, that only are controlled by a few more Republican votes on the ground. And in this moment, we are seeing a significant coalition of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans coming together, which means that everything is possible this cycle,” said Fried.

Incoming House Minority Leader Christine Hunschofsky, (D- Parkland), argues republicans have focused more on politics than kitchen table issues like affordability.

“So many get lost when they get up to Tallahassee and start thinking they serve leadership instead of serving the people who elected them. They’d rather spend their time in the Capitol trying to divide people with a tax on the communities they’re supposed to serve, and with political stunts that’ll get them on the news. But they’re not working to lower the costs that are hitting working families and seniors every day,” said Hunschofsky.

Republican leaders and lawmakers however say that Florida voters continue to back their agenda time and time again.

“When you talk about affordability, the Republicans here in Florida have delivered it with tort reform. Insurance rates are coming down. You’re seeing a property tax amendment on the ballot so people can lower their property taxes. I think it’s important to remember, Democrats set this economy on fire and their policies only drive up costs. Their solution is to give the government more power,” said Evan Power, Chair of the Republican Party of Florida.

Power is confident Republicans will win across the board this election cycle.

State Representative Meg Weinberger, (R- Palm Beach Gardens), says she believes momentum is on their side in this election.

“I’m very confident. When I’m door knocking and canvassing, I’m hearing great feedback,” said Weinberger. “This election is very important. It’s protecting what we’ve built. We cannot go backwards. We have to keep moving forward.”
