The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says that the officer has been suspended while the agency seeks his termination.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A patrol officer was arrested Tuesday after his body-worn camera caught him hitting a man in his custody, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters announced.
On Monday, July 13, Waters said that Officer Shane Saydek, who had been with the agency for over three years, arrested a 43-year-old man for possession of an open container in a vehicle and resisting an officer while conducting a traffic stop.

According to Saydek’s arrest report, after being transported to the Duval County Jail, the facility’s fingerprint machine was said to not be working, so corrections officers had returned the man to Saydek’s custody to get his fingerprints.
While attempting to get them, the report says that the man had been “tensing his arms and curling his fingers,” preventing his fingerprints from being taken. During the incident, his fingernail had cut Saydek’s palm, the report states.
Waters said during this time, Saydek got increasingly frustrated with the man and hit him in the face twice.
Another officer on scene reportedly witnessed Saydek attacking the man and later reported it. Saydek was arrested for battery on Tuesday. The agency is currently seeking his termination.
Waters says that while disappointed in Saydek’s behavior, the sheriff’s office will not be changing the way officers are trained.
“Our JSO policy and training already makes it abundantly clear that Saydek’s behavior is illegal,” the sheriff said. “Saydek may very well have been frustrated during his interaction with this subject; however, his frustration absolutely did not justify his actions.”
This is the sixth arrest of a JSO employee by the agency in 2026, but several others have been made outside of the county.
