TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Commissioners discussed the future of fire services in the county on Tuesday.
The county attorney updated commissioners on the fire service agreement as the latest in the back-and-forth between the city and county.
At Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to notify the city in writing that they are not following their joint agreement.
County Commission Chair Christian Caban says, under their current agreement, if the contract is terminated, the City of Tallahassee would have to transfer fire-related assets to the county at a reasonable cost.
He says the city is now arguing this isn’t a termination, but rather an expiration of the agreement which would mean the county would not receive those assets at a discounted cost.
Caban says the city manager previously sent the county a letter referencing termination.
County staff plans to provide written notice to the City of their “noncompliance with the Interlocal Agreement.”
The wording could make a big difference for people living in the unincorporated areas of the county but Caban says residents shouldn’t be concerned.
“We’re going to do what’s best for all county residents and we’re going to make sure that there is going to be no lapse in service with county residents at all,” Caban said. “They will be able to maintain fair, equitable and affordable services that treat all residents equally, which is currently not happening.
Caban says the county will hold a workshop in September where commissioners will review data and feedback from consultants to help determine the best and safest way to provide fire services moving forward.
“Right now they are just playing petty political games and trying to make the county uncontrollable and invoke fear on residents which is just wrong, it’s not really going to affect us. In September we have a workshop coming back,” Caban said. “The county will get together, we’ll have all the feedback, we’ll have all the data from our consultants and we’ll come up with a good safe and equitable way to provide fire services.”
WCTV asked the city and Mayor Dailey for comment, but they would not provide one.
