PortMiami did not become one of the greatest ports in the world by accident. It took decades of vision, billions of dollars in investment, thousands of dedicated workers, and leaders who understood that Miami-Dade County needed a global gateway to compete. Today, PortMiami is the Cruise Capital of the World, one of America’s busiest cargo ports, and one of our community’s most important economic engines. It creates jobs, supports businesses, and helps make Miami-Dade one of the most recognized places on the planet. Residents should be proud of PortMiami.
But pride cannot replace accountability.
When taxpayers invest billions of dollars in one of the County’s greatest assets, they deserve more than ribbon cuttings and announcements. They deserve results, transparency, and a clear plan for the future. This is not about the hardworking employees, businesses, cruise partners, and professionals who keep PortMiami moving every day—they deserve full credit for building and operating one of the world’s premier ports. This is about leadership, oversight, and accountability.
The problems facing PortMiami did not begin yesterday. They developed over many years, through different administrations and a series of decisions. Every administration inherits challenges, and every administration has a responsibility to address them. At some point, taxpayers have every right to ask: Who is watching PortMiami?
The following is a partial list of concerns that deserve answers.
Problem #1 — The $125 Million Shore Power Project
The Shore Power Project was promoted as a transformational investment that would reduce emissions, modernize PortMiami, and position Miami-Dade as an environmental leader—at a cost of approximately $125 million. Taxpayers now deserve to know the results. Did the project stay on budget? Are the promised benefits being delivered? What are the long-term operating and maintenance costs?
Major public investments should not be judged solely by ribbon-cutting ceremonies. They should be measured by their performance years later. Results—not announcements—are the true standard.
Problem #2 — Are We Investing in the Right Priorities?
PortMiami currently holds approximately $180 million in reserves, yet critical infrastructure needs remain unaddressed. Unlike Miami International Airport, PortMiami has not invested in needed electrical upgrades. The North Bulkhead requires improvement. At least two gantry cranes are currently out of service, limiting cargo capacity at a time when competing ports continue to expand.
These are not minor issues. They affect efficiency, competitiveness, and PortMiami’s ability to grow. A world-class port cannot afford to fall behind on the infrastructure it needs to compete.
Problem #3 — The Fisher Island Fuel Facility
The decision to move forward with the Fisher Island fuel facility raises serious questions about PortMiami’s long-term priorities. Whether through a quick-take or long-take acquisition, PortMiami will be responsible for paying the court-established purchase price while immediately assuming the costs of operating and maintaining the facility.
Taxpayers deserve a full accounting of the financial impact and an explanation of how this project could affect other needed capital improvements. A major undertaking involving fuel, Biscayne Bay, and public dollars demands complete transparency and careful planning.
Problem #4 — Where Is the Long-Term Vision?
The port industry is changing rapidly. Other states are investing billions of dollars to expand, modernize, and compete for future business. Miami-Dade cannot assume that yesterday’s success guarantees tomorrow’s.
Where is PortMiami’s 20-year strategic plan? Where is the public roadmap showing how the Port intends to remain competitive as other ports continue to grow? Great ports do not stand still—they plan ahead.
Problem #5 — Where Is the Transparency?
Taxpayers should have a straightforward way to measure PortMiami’s performance. A public dashboard showing cargo activity, equipment availability, project budgets, and project timelines would allow residents to see whether major investments are being completed on time and within budget.
Private companies measure performance every day because they understand that accountability drives improvement. Government should hold itself to the same standard. Transparency builds confidence. Accountability builds trust.
The Bottom Line
PortMiami is too important to ignore difficult questions. This is not about tearing down one of Miami-Dade County’s greatest achievements—it is about protecting it. The people who built PortMiami created something extraordinary. The responsibility of today’s leaders is to ensure it remains that way for future generations.
These challenges did not develop overnight, and they will not be solved with another announcement.
A world-class port deserves world-class leadership. Miami-Dade taxpayers deserve to know that the future of PortMiami is in good hands.
