In 1902, Ybor City’s historic Centro Asturiano was founded by Spanish immigrants, and it’s remained a special gathering place for that community ever since.
Soccer fans can feel the love this weekend when the venue hosts a party to watch the World Cup final where Spain will take on the winner of the England v. Argentina match happening Wednesday afternoon.
The venue also hosted a watch party yesterday, when Spain dismantled a supposedly-unbeatable French side to advance to the final
“This is more than just a soccer match—it’s an opportunity to celebrate Spanish heritage, community, and tradition together,” Cristal Lastra, President of the Centro Asturiano de Tampa wrote in a press release. “Whether you’ve followed every match of the tournament or simply want to experience the energy of a World Cup Final surrounded by fellow fans, everyone is welcome.”
Centro Asturiano de Tampa—located at 1913 N Nebraska Ave.—was founded by Spanish immigrants from the Asturias province in northern Spain.
The Asturias have produced notable Spanish national team stars including David Villa, who was part of the 2010 Spain team that won the country’s first World Cup title. The side taking the pitch in New York this weekend, however, has no players from the region.
Kickoff for the World Cup final is at 3 p.m. Centro Asturiano will open doors at 2:15 p.m. A cash bar will be available throughout the match.
The gathering is just one of many World Cup final watch parties happening across Tampa Bay.
