SEATTLE — The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are under review after an ultra-low flyover over Pensacola Beach, Florida, that left some beachgoers thrilled and others terrified as a jet passed directly overhead.
The low pass happened on Wednesday morning as people watched from the beach. Video from the scene showed beach umbrellas sent flying and people reacting to the roar as the aircraft swept over the shoreline.
“I’ve been coming for 10 years, and I’ve never seen a pass like that in my life,” Ashley Korn, who was on the beach, said. “I literally thought we were going to be taken out by Blue Angels, but it was amazing.”
In a statement, the Blue Angels said, “The safety of our hometown community, spectators, and our pilots is our highest priority. Team leadership is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the maneuver and conducting a thorough safety review to ensure all operations adhere to strict Navy and FAA safety standards.”
The review comes as the Blue Angels prepare to return to Western Washington for Seafair, a summer tradition that brings the team’s signature roar over Lake Washington.
The Blue Angels are scheduled to begin practicing July 30, with performances set for July 31 through Aug. 2.
