A St. Petersburg man has been arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder and robbery following a violent attack at Bartlett Park, according to St. Petersburg Police.

Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Dandre Thurman, 49. Investigators said the victim was lying on a picnic table bench when Thurman allegedly approached and began punching, kicking and stomping on the victim’s head and face, which caused severe injuries and disfigurement.

Authorities said Thurman then went through the victim’s backpack and stole personal items before leaving the area on foot. The victim was transported to Bayfront Health’s trauma center and remained in critical condition, according to arrest affidavits.

Police said surveillance video captured the attack, and a witness later positively identified Thurman as the suspect.
