Cape Coral was awarded a $6.5 million grant from regional and state agencies to help fund part of the city’s major utility extension project in the North 1 East project area. It is one of several grants reducing the $227.5 million cost for area homeowners, who are funding the utility extension through a special assessment on their annual tax bills.
City Council on July 15 approved the grant, awarded through the South Florida Water Management District and Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Alternative Water Supply Funding Program. The funding specifically pays for 182,000 linear feet of 4- to 24-inch reclaimed water mains.
The overall project connects residents north of Pine Island Road to the city’s water, sewer and irrigation systems while transitioning properties off wells and septic systems that tap into the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer.
The 4.3-square-mile North 1 East extension is expected to be completed by December 2027, followed by North 1 West and other project areas.
