Jobsite Theater stages “American Idiot,” the musical, just in time for America’s 250th anniversary and the resurgence of Y2K fashion, a housing crisis and another war in the Middle East.

The pop-punk musical, which premiered at the Straz Center yesterday and runs through August 9, explores the faults of post 9/11 America through a critical lens. Three friends, Johnny, Tunny and Will, navigate the struggles of hopelessness and existentialism as economic uncertainties, a new war and media conformity dilute the American dream.

Jobsite actors will perform the entire 2004 title album, as well as “21 Guns,” “Know Your Enemy” and original scores.

The musical debuted in 2010 with Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong playing a lead role of drug dealer St. Jimmy. Tampa native Spencer Meyers fills that role for Jobsite.

Other stars of the Tampa show include Matthew Morris as Tunny, Cody Farkas as Johnny and resident actor and stage manager for Jobsite, Jarryn McCann, playing Will.

Tickets start at $50 for “American Idiot” the musical on select nights through August 9 in Tampa.
