Tropical Areas to Watch: Gulf and Atlantic tropical disturbances have low odds of development this week
Neither area poses a direct threat to Southwest Florida.
FORT MYERS, Fla. —
Your Gulf Coast Storm Team is closely monitoring two areas of interest; one in the northeastern Gulf and another in the eastern Atlantic. As of 8 p.m. Thursday, the latest odds for development in the Gulf remain at zero over the next 48 hours and only 20 percent over the next seven days.
A broad area of low pressure is expected to form over the northeastern Gulf this weekend. Slow development is possible as this disturbance drifts northeast by early next week.
Impact on Southwest Florida
Regardless of development, this will bring rounds of soaking rain to much of the state, including locally here along the Gulf Coast.
As more moisture filters into the region, Southwest Florida can expect slightly higher rain chances. Expect off-and-on again rain to filter through the Gulf Coast this weekend though no one day will be a washout. The highest rainfall totals will likely target our northernmost communities.
While this is unlikely to become a tropical cyclone, the next name on the list is Tropical Storm Bertha. Be sure to frequently check back into the forecast as we monitor any indirect impacts along the Gulf Coast.
Area of Interest Near Africa
The National Hurricane Center has also highlighted a disturbance near the Cabo Verde Islands. Disorganized showers and storms associated with a tropical wave have low odds for development. Development odds still holding strong at 10%. As the disturbance tracks west at 10 mph, the environment is expected to become less favorable for development this weekend.
This disturbance poses no threat to the U.S. We have yet to see a named storm this July. The last time there were no named July storms was the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season.
