Hillsborough County, FL – Hillsborough County is moving forward with a major investment in its utility system after county commissioners approved more than $650 million in financing for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

The Board of County Commissioners voted to authorize the financing package, which will support a series of capital improvement projects designed to expand capacity, modernize aging infrastructure and improve the reliability of the county’s utility system.

Officials said the projects are intended to meet the needs of a growing population while maintaining dependable water and wastewater services for residents and businesses.

According to county leaders, the funding will be used for improvements to drinking water treatment facilities, wastewater treatment plants, transmission pipelines, pump stations and other critical utility infrastructure.

Several of the projects focus on replacing aging equipment while increasing the system’s ability to handle future demand.

The financing will be provided through utility revenue bonds, which are repaid using revenue generated by the county’s water and wastewater system rather than property tax dollars.

County officials said the funding structure allows the county to complete large infrastructure projects while continuing long term planning for future utility needs.

Commissioners said the investment is part of Hillsborough County’s ongoing effort to strengthen essential public infrastructure and support continued residential and commercial growth throughout the region.

Construction on the various projects will occur over several years as individual improvements move through the design, permitting and construction process.

County officials said the projects are expected to improve system reliability, increase operational efficiency and ensure the water and wastewater system can continue serving the county’s growing population well into the future.
