Miami-Dade, FL – Three people are facing criminal charges after investigators uncovered what authorities described as an alleged scheme to fraudulently obtain Florida driver’s licenses by using concealed electronic devices during written driving exams.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the investigation took place at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles testing center on West Flagler Street in Miami.
Detectives assigned to the Public Corruption Bureau said the suspects allegedly used hidden button cameras, microphones, and wireless earpieces to communicate answers during the computer based driver’s license knowledge exam.
According to arrest reports, investigators allege one suspect coordinated the operation by providing specially modified shirts equipped with hidden electronic devices that allowed answers to be relayed to test takers from outside the examination room.
Authorities also allege one suspect paid $600 for the service after previously failing the exam multiple times.
Another suspect allegedly participated in the scheme but told investigators the earpiece did not work properly, and the individual did not pass the exam.
Authorities said one suspect was charged with allegedly organizing a scheme to defraud, cheating, unlawful use of a communications device, and providing a false name after arrest.
The other two suspects each face charges of allegedly cheating and unlawfully using a communications device.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue examining the alleged operation and whether additional individuals may have been involved.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
