MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – A federal civil forfeiture lawsuit has been filed seeking to seize a $6.625 million waterfront home on Marco Island, Florida, that prosecutors allege was purchased using money diverted from the Mishawaka Fieldhouse project.
The property is titled to James “Andy” Card and Martha Card. Court documents allege the couple is connected to a wire fraud scheme in which funds from the Mishawaka Fieldhouse project were diverted for personal use, including the purchase of the Florida home.
Card is the owner of Card Associates Athletic Facilities, LLC, an Indianapolis-based real estate development company that focuses on large-scale sports complexes and wellness centers. Card and the company developed and constructed the Mishawaka Fieldhouse, which opened in 2024. The project cost more than $38 million, funded in large part by the City of Mishawaka.
Alleged money trail
According to court documents, after two project disbursements — $2.875 million and $2.432 million — were deposited into project accounts, $1.8 million and then $2.5 million were moved into a separate account.
Prosecutors also allege Card used “gift letters” — documents framing the funds as a gift from Card to his wife for the down payment and closing costs — as a means of concealment to make the money appear legitimate.
City of Mishawaka response
The City of Mishawaka released a statement saying it recently became aware of the allegations and had no knowledge of the alleged fradulent conduct.
The City of Mishawaka has recently become aware of allegations involving fraudulent activity that resulted in the unauthorized diversion of funds from the Mishawaka Fieldhouse project.
At no time did the City have knowledge of this fraudulent conduct. The City followed its established policies and procedures and exercised appropriate due diligence based on the information available at the time.
Because this is an active investigation, the City is limited in what it can publicly disclose at this time.
The city is committed to protecting public resources and maintaining the trust of its residents. We will pursue every legal remedy available to recover any funds that were unlawfully used and will work with law enforcement and all appropriate parties as needed moving forward.
As this matter remains under investigation, the city will have no further comment at this time.
