Chances for tropical development increase in the Gulf
Development chances are rising for the Gulf Disturbance.
Your Gulf Coast Storm Team is closely monitoring an area of interest in the eastern Gulf. As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the latest odds for development are at 20 percent over the next 48 hours and 30 percent over the next seven days.
While nothing has formed yet, disorganized showers and thunderstorms are emerging. This is associated with an upper-level low pressure system. Gradual development is possible as this system drifts north over the next few days. Regardless of development, this will bring heavy rain to the Florida peninsula.
Impact on Southwest Florida
Direct impacts to Southwest Florida are unlikely. While the disturbance lifts northward through the weekend, it will bring rounds of soaking rain to much of the state, including locally here along the Gulf Coast. The highest rainfall totals will likely target north Florida and the Panhandle.
As more moisture filters into the region, Southwest Florida can expect slightly higher rain chances. Expect on-and-off again rain to filter through the Gulf Coast this weekend, though no one day will be a washout.
While development chances remain low at the time, if this were to develop into a tropical storm, the next name on the list is Tropical Storm Bertha. Be sure to frequently check back as we monitor any indirect impacts along the Gulf Coast.
