High development odds, System in Gulf likely to become a tropical depression late Sunday or early Monday
Invest 91L formed in the Gulf Saturday morning and could become a tropical depression in the next few days.
Development odds on the area of disturbed weather in the Gulf have increased. As of Sunday at 7:00 A.M., development odds stand at 80% over the next 48 hours and 80% over the next seven days. This system will likely become a tropical depression later today or early tomorrow.

This system has been dubbed Invest 91L and is showing signs of organization. Right now, it is still a cluster of showers and thunderstorms, but it could gradually strengthen over the next few days. The Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to investigate this storm later today.

Regardless of development, this will bring heavy rain to parts of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. No direct impacts are expected in Southwest Florida.
Impact on Southwest Florida
No direct impacts are expected in Southwest Florida. While the system drifts northward, it will bring rounds of soaking rain to much of the state, including locally here along the Gulf Coast. The highest rainfall totals will likely target North Florida and the Panhandle.
As more moisture filters into the region, Southwest Florida can expect slightly higher rain chances. Expect on-and-off again rain to filter through the Gulf Coast this weekend, though no one day will be a washout.
If this were to develop into a tropical storm, the next name on the list is Tropical Storm Bertha. This would be our second named storm of the 2026 hurricane season. Be sure to frequently check back as we monitor any indirect impacts along the Gulf Coast.
What is an “Invest”?
“Invest” is a shorthand way of saying “area of investigation”. The term is used by the National Hurricane Center when forecasters want to take a closer look at it for the possibility of future development. When a system is named an invest, extra information becomes available, such as spaghetti plots.
