WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Florida is included in a 27-state recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce that may be contaminated with Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Taylor Farms de Mexico is removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market after the product was implicated in a multistate Cyclospora outbreak, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recalled lettuce was distributed from June 29 through July 16 in Florida and 26 other states. The recall includes retail packages of Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at Walmart, along with numerous products distributed to restaurants and other food-service customers.
Taylor Farms said it was “deeply concerned” for those who became ill, their families and consumers whose confidence in fresh produce safety had been shaken.
“That trust is something we’ve worked for decades to earn, and we are committed to doing everything in our power to restore that confidence,” the company said in a statement.
Taylor Farms said the FDA’s investigation traced the potential source of the outbreak to a specific independent farm that represents less than 1% of the iceberg lettuce supply in the United States.
However, the company said it has indefinitely removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from the region.

Taylor Farms said it stopped receiving products from the implicated lot, suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, notified customers and is continuing to cooperate with the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state authorities.
The company also emphasized that no Taylor Farms-branded salads or salad kits have been associated with the outbreak.
“No Taylor Farms branded salad kits contain iceberg lettuce,” the company said.
Taylor Farms released a statement that said, in part, “Based on information provided yesterday by the FDA, Taylor Farms de Mexico is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.”
The recall includes Marketside-brand iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at select Walmart stores in Florida and 14 other states. Marketside is Walmart’s private food brand.
Consumers should check for Marketside Iceberg Salad in 12-ounce and 24-ounce packages and Marketside Shredded Lettuce in 8-ounce and 16-ounce packages with “Best if Used By” dates from July 18 through Aug. 3, 2026.
The action follows an FDA investigation that linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia to a Cyclospora outbreak.
Although recalled lettuce was distributed in Florida, federal officials have not identified Florida as one of the five states included in the Taco Bell outbreak.
Florida has separately reported cyclosporiasis cases amid a broader national increase in infections, but those illnesses have not necessarily been connected to the recalled lettuce or the Taco Bell outbreak.
Taco Bell said it worked quickly to remove the affected product and that the ingredient was removed from its supply chain nationwide.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can spread when people consume food or water contaminated with feces. Produce can become contaminated when it is irrigated or washed with unsafe water.
The most common symptom is frequent watery diarrhea. Other symptoms can include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea and fatigue.
Some patients may experience vomiting, body aches, headaches or fever. Symptoms can last for several days to a month or longer and may appear to improve before returning.
People with weakened immune systems may experience more severe or prolonged illnesses.

Consumers who purchased recalled lettuce should throw it away and not eat it. Full refunds are available at the location where the product was purchased.
Anyone experiencing possible Cyclospora symptoms should contact a health care provider.
Taylor Farms said consumers with questions can contact its customer care team at 855-455-0098 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday.
