Florida officials monitoring tropical disturbance, expect no major emergency

  • July 20, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – Florida’s new emergency operations center is up and running and leaders say the state is monitoring Tropical Depression Two, but they’re not sounding any alarms just yet.

Five trucks are staged in Central Florida just in case of an emergency.

During this storm, the state government is taking a back seat, but preparing to swoop in should the situation call for it.

Florida’s emergency management director Kevin Guthrie says they’re expecting the only impact to be heavy rainfall.

“But right now we’re just looking at rain impacts, two, four, six inches of rain, maybe some isolated areas that get a little bit more than that depending on where bands set up. But that’s what we’re looking at right now. We’re certainly not looking at anything that’s going to activate the EOC to any certain major level,” said Guthrie.

They’re asking people to do three things: receive emergency alerts, listen to local emergency management and then do what they say.

“It’s always a good time, again, to make sure you have your kit, you have your plan, your vehicle is at least halfway full with gas,” Guthrie said. “So, if you are taking an action plan, you can do it and then evacuate tens of miles, not hundreds of miles.”

Guthrie says he expects most impacts to be focused on the panhandle, and specifically along and near the Gulf.

If conditions do warrant, Guthrie said they’ll move those trucks that are staged in Central Florida to Tallahassee with the ability to deploy the rest, but they hope that won’t be necessary.
