Cynthia Nixon to officiate lesbian weddings in St. Pete for Bride Pride

“Sex and the City” star and former New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon is coming to St. Pete to try to break a world record.

The star will officiate Bride Pride, an “all-girl” wedding and renewal ceremony, happening Feb. 21 to cap off Winter Pride St. Pete. The ceremony will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest All-Girl Wedding and Renewal Ceremony,” organizers said in a press release.

This is the third Bride Pride, and the third time its founders, Allison Baldwin and Ilene Mitnick, will renew their vows. The first two events were held in Provincetown, MA, in 2016 and 2017, where more than 50 couples each year were married or renewed their vows. At the time, Baldwin and Mitnick ran a bed-and-breakfast called Roux Provincetown, but the couple now live in Tampa Bay.

When asked if the “all-girl” event is inclusive of nonbinary and transmasc residents—many of whom identify with the lesbian and sapphic community—Baldwin told CL, “We warmly welcome cisgender women, lesbians, masc lesbians, bisexual women, transgender women, and non-binary people who feel that Bride Pride reflects who they are and that this celebration is for them.”

“Because ‘non-binary’ and ‘transmasculine’ can mean different things to different people, we don’t make assumptions based on labels or pronouns,” Baldwin continued.

“We simply ask that participants feel the event celebrating women loving women authentically reflects their own identity and experience. If someone identifies as a man, including a trans man, Bride Pride probably isn’t the right fit—and we say that with love and respect for their identity.”

The event is sponsored by gender- and size-inclusive clothing brand Tomboyx and LGBTQ+ publications Out, The Advocate and Them.

“At a time when visibility and community matter more than ever, Bride Pride creates a beautiful and joyful public celebration of love,” Cynthia Nixon said in the press release. “I’m honored to help bring these couples together in such a meaningful and historic way.”
