Del McCoury Band

CLEARWATER — The Grammy Award winning Del McCoury Band will perform on Saturday, Nov. 15, 8 p.m., at the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., Clearwater.

Tickets start at $40. Visit www.rutheckerdhall.com or call 727-791-7400.

Even among the pantheon of music’s finest artists, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks, rural schoolhouse stages, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, McCoury is the living link. On primetime and late-night television talk shows, there is McCoury. From headlining sold-out concerts to music festivals of all genres, including one carrying his namesake, there is McCoury. Where audiences number in the tens of thousands, and admirers as diverse as country-rock icon Steve Earle and jamband royalty Phish count as a few among hundreds, there is McCoury.

Emerging from humble beginnings in York County, Pennsylvania, nearly 80 years ago, McCoury was not the likeliest of candidates for legendary status. As a teen, he was captivated by the banjo playing of one of its masters, Earl Scruggs, and decided he’d be a banjo picker, too. The Baltimore/Washington, D.C., bar scene of the early 1960s was lively and rough. McCoury caught a break, joining Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in early 1963. Considered the Father of Bluegrass, Monroe transformed McCoury, moving him from the banjo to guitar, anointing him lead singer, and providing him with a priceless trove of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source. Countless hours of recording sessions and miles of tireless touring dotted the decades. Del carried on and carried with him the hallowed traditions of the form and its dedicated following.

Their latest release, “Songs of Love and Life,” is a 15-song collection. The album follows 2021’s celebrated, Grammy-nominated release, “Almost Proud,” and once again features McCoury touching down on a diverse set of tracks — vintage and contemporary — as he and his crackerjack band nod to icons Kenny Rogers, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley, as well as welcome next-generation talent, Molly Tuttle, to the party.

America is celebrating their 55th anniversary with a series of tour dates in 2025. Billed as “Encore Tour 2025,” the tour will continue throughout the year, with many more shows to be added coast to coast. Known for their timeless magic and powerful performances, the Grammy Award-winning perennial classic-rock favorite will draw on their deep catalog of hits including the signature song “A Horse With No Name,” a No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1972.

On their way to becoming a global household name, America’s journey found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes — which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” — were cornerstones of 1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of melodic pop rock and folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with other more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics.

From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America’s audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Visit www.safetyharborartandmusiccenter.com.

According to his official website, as a teenager in the 1990s Németh was drawn to the hard-edged hip-hop sounds and rock bands of the day until a friend introduced him to the Junior Wells and Buddy Guy classic “Hoodoo Man Blues.” That friend — Tom Moore — partnered with Németh to form Fat John & the 3 Slims, which is still regarded as a legendary band in the Boise region of Idaho. Németh played harp and sang in local bands, often opening the show for nationally touring blues acts. He soon caught the ear of established blues musicians.

It didn’t take long before Németh was releasing his own recordings, “The Jack Of Harps” (2002) and “Come And Get It” (2004), featuring Junior Watson, and performing in Junior Watson’s band.

In 2004, Németh relocated to San Francisco, California, playing with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. Németh immersed himself in the deep musical waters of the Bay area, absorbing more of the soul and funk grooves of what he calls “the early East Bay Grease sound” of San Francisco and Oakland bands. This led to a recording contract with Blind Pig Records. His national debut for that label, “Magic Touch” (2007), was produced by Anson Funderburgh and featured Junior Watson on guitar. Two additional albums followed on the Blind Pig label, including “Love Me Tonight” (2009) & “Name The Day (2010). Both of these hit No. 6 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and began his long string of Blues Music Award (BMA) nominations, numbering 20 at last count.

Németh’s most recent release, “May Be the Last Time,” was released in 2022 on Nola Blue.

The trio features Dug Pinnick on bass and vocals, Jerry Gaskill on drums and vocals, and Ty Tabor on guitar and vocals. No other band in history has pushed hard rock, alternative, metal, progressive, and soul into a galaxy quite like the one King’s X occupy.

Along the way, they constructed a catalog of seminal releases, beginning with their 1988 full-length debut, “Out of the Silent Planet.” The follow-up, “Gretchen Goes to Nebraska,” continues to inspire think pieces.

Following the release of “Dogman,” the group graced the stage of Woodstock 1994 and toured with everyone from Pearl Jam and AC/DC to Mötley Crüe and Iron Maiden. They also attracted one of the most diehard fanbases in music with “Ear Candy” (1996), “Tape Head” (1998), “Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous” (2000), “Manic Moonlight” (2001), “Black Like Sunday” (2003), “Ogre Tones” (2005), and “XV” (2008).

Tickets start at $35.43. Visit www.jannuslive.com.

The Expendables have proven anything but in their nearly 25-year career since starting out as a spirited party band in high school performing surf-rock covers for birthdays and family gatherings. A quarter-century later, elementary school buddies Raul Bianchi, Adam Peterson andGeoff Weers, along with bassist Ryan DeMars, who joined in 2000, have forged a unique sound born in the laid-back beach life in their hometown of Santa Cruz, California.

The Expendables’ infectious hybrid of ska, surf-rock, punk, reggae and metal can be heard in their latest streaming track, “Surfman Cometh,” a spaghetti-western meets “Pipeline” twang that could easily form the soundtrack to the latest Quentin Tarantino film. The song is the first release from the group’s new and improved Band Room, their longtime rehearsal space in a 1,100 square foot warehouse and former wine cellar on Coral Street, where Adam Patterson took charge of the final mix to great effect.

The band’s previous studio album of original material, 2015’s “Sand in the Sky,” was followed by The Expendables’ second release featuring acoustic reworking of past material, “Gone Raw,” 2019’s follow-up to 2012’s “Gone Soft.” The Expendables continue woodshedding until they can get back out on the road. Their 2017 “Moment” EP, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae chart, showed the band starting to move into different musical directions, a set featuring collaborations with reggae crooner HIRIE, rapper Tech N9ne, Eric Rachmany, andMicah Peuschel

For 22 years, the Rhode Island-based band — Joel Hanks on bass, Scott Begin on drums, Pat Downes on vocals and guitar, Danny Torgersen on horns, keyboards, and guitars — have successfully paid tribute to Sublime, the short-lived but influential California group that brought ska-punk and reggae-rock to the mainstream. Badfish’s heartfelt celebration of Sublime’s musical spirit and legacy is so sought-after that they’ve headlined theaters, sold out shows, and played 15 to 20 gigs a month.

But now, Badfish is more. After two decades of Sublime reverence, Badfish originality is stomping into high gear. Badfish recently released its second new song, the anthemic, groove-fortified “F You Pay Me,” with special guest Grieves, as the follow-up to the band’s first single, “High on You.”

On stage, you get Badfish playing the best of Sublime as well as the best of Badfish.

“With the kinetic energy that the band has amassed over years of performing, the ideas just keep flowing out of the blue and we are lucky enough to capture them,” said Begin. “Perspective is a great tool in music composition, and we’ve got plenty of that by now. When it feels right, it feels right … and these songs sure feel right.”

They are known for their anthemic, inimitable sound and fiercely loyal fanbase. The band has embarked on a bold new era with the release of “Suckerpunch,” out via their own imprint, Basement Noise Records, in partnership with Photo Finish Records/Virgin Music Group. Sonically all arena-rock bombast and lyrically sentimental, “Suckerpunch” — co-produced by frontman Gaskarth alongside Dan Swank — signals a thrilling new chapter for the rock outfit, who have sold more than 3.5 million albums in the U.S. alone and have garnered over 5 billion streams worldwide to date.

“‘Suckerpunch’ is a song about getting knocked down so many times that you learn to wear your bruises like badges,” Gaskarth said. “The music and tone of the song are so intentionally steeped in overconfident swagger, while the lyrics tell a very different story about stepping into the ring with an opponent twice your size, waiting for the bell to ring with a smile on your face. It’s saying, ‘I have been so many different things for you, why not be your punching bag as well?’ I wanted to marry the grit and punch of an arena rock song with moments of Quincy Jones and Genesis. That culminated in a song that felt like kicking the door down, so we knew this had to come out first.”

The concert also will feature performances by Mayday Parade, Four Year Strong and The Paradox.

Tickets start at $50.75. Visit www.theritzybor.com.

The tongue-in-cheek story of Gwar is carved across the history of this barren and hopeless planet, but Gwar themselves are not of this world, according to Metal Blade Records. Their story begins in the deepest reaches of outer space. Long ago, the beings who would become the rock band Gwar were part of an elite fighting force, the Scumdogs of the Universe.

For eons, they served as thralls to a supreme being known only as the Master. But one by one, each future member of the band earned a glaring reputation for being an intergalactic failure. They were banished, sent away on a fool’s errand to conquer an insignificant planet floating in a dark corner of the universe: the planet Earth.

Once here, Gwar shaped the face of the globe, destroying and rebuilding the natural world, and giving rise to all of human history. Aliens to some, gods and demons to others, these erstwhile Scumdogs helped create the human race.

A less embellished biography of the band places their formation in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984. Their thematic and visual concept revolves around an elaborate, sci-fi themed mythology. Their music and performances feature over-the-top violent, sexual and scatological humor as well as social and political satire.

Gwar’s most recent album, “The New Dark Ages,” was released in 2022.
