Addison Bounds knows the dangers of spiked drinks, particularly for young women in social settings. She told FOX 13 News reporter Jennifer Kveglis that a close friend of hers was assaulted after their drink was drugged.
According to Kveglis’ reporting for the Tampa Bay news station, that incident and similar personal stories inspired the 22-year-old University of South Florida graduate student to co-found Elora Armor, which creates jewelry with a small sensor hidden inside bracelets, bag charms and pendants.
The electromagnetic sensors are designed to test a drop of the drink and to alert wearers through a smartphone app when dangerous drugs, like benzodiazepines, have been slipped into their drinks.
“It’s like a really rude awakening of like, wow, there are people that really intend to do harm and there isn’t really anyone looking out for us except for ourselves,” Bounds told Kveglis.
Bounds and co-founder Kiara Robichaud told Kveglis that they plan to release the product in January 2028, just before the Summer Olympics, and hope it will become part of a national movement to prevent drink spiking.
