Hillsborough County, FL – Hillsborough County Public Schools is moving forward with a plan to reduce the amount of time students spend using digital devices during classroom instruction as part of a broader effort to increase traditional learning methods.
School district leaders recently discussed new guidelines that would limit screen use for students, with the largest changes focused on children in kindergarten through second grade.
Officials said the proposal is intended to create a better balance between technology and teacher led instruction while encouraging more face to face interaction in the classroom.
Under the proposed changes, younger students would spend more time reading printed books, practicing handwriting, participating in classroom discussions and completing hands on learning activities.
Computers and other digital devices would continue to be used when required for state assessments, progress monitoring and specific educational lessons.
District officials said technology became a larger part of classroom instruction during the COVID 19 pandemic, but they believe students also benefit from learning experiences that do not rely on screens throughout the school day.
School leaders said the proposal is designed to support literacy, communication and student engagement while maintaining access to technology when it serves an educational purpose.
The district also referenced research examining the effects of prolonged screen use on children’s learning and development.
Parents have been informed about the proposed changes as the district prepares for the upcoming school year.
The Hillsborough County School Board is expected to continue reviewing the guidelines before they are implemented.
