UPSHOT League sets inaugural championship game in Jacksonville
Savannah Steel with about a month left to make a late-season push for a spot in the inaugural UPSHOT League championship.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
The Savannah Steel have about a month to change the course of their inaugural season — and a chance to make history remains on the table.
The UPSHOT League announced Wednesday that its first championship game will be played Aug. 29 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville.
The league’s top two teams at the end of the regular season will meet for the inaugural championship, meaning there is no automatic playoff berth or postseason tournament. The announcement puts even more importance on the remaining regular-season games.
“The championship will feature two teams that finish first and second in the Upshot League standings,” league commissioner Donna Orender said. “That format changes the competitive landscape of the remainder of our season.”
The Steel currently sit at the bottom of the league standings with a 7-15 record after navigating injuries and roster turnover throughout the season.
Savannah will now look to make a late-season push for a chance to play for the first Upshot League championship.
The championship game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. Additional events surrounding the championship, including a coaches clinic, kids clinic, discussion on the rise of women’s sports and fan experiences featuring women-owned businesses, will be announced at a later date.
