ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB) – A 47-year-old St. Petersburg sanitation worker was shot and killed while inside her city vehicle Wednesday, and the suspect was later taken into custody in Lee County following a standoff on Interstate 75, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a person shot shortly after noon in the 4100 block of 12th Avenue South. The victim, a 12-year city of St. Petersburg sanitation technician, was shot while sitting inside her front-loader work vehicle. She leaves behind four children.
Police said the victim and suspect were known to each other and the shooting was a targeted attack. The suspect fled the scene and drove south.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers located the suspect in Lee County later Wednesday afternoon. He was stopped on Interstate 75 southbound by FHP and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and taken into custody after a standoff. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office can be contacted for additional details on the arrest.
The city of St. Petersburg said counselors will be available to city employees to help them with their grief.
