A suspect is in custody after a St. Pete city employee was shot and killed in the Childs Park neighborhood.
Police responded Wednesday afternoon to 12th Avenue, where they say the victim, a 47-year-old mother of four, was shot several times while in the cab of her front-end loader work vehicle.
During a press conference, Chief Anthony Holloway said evidence suggests an argument broke out between the suspect and the victim — who knew each other — prior to the shooting.
Just hours after the shooting, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) found the suspect on I-75 in Ft. Myers and pulled him over. Authorities said he was barricaded inside his car before being taken into custody in Lee County.
FHP told CBS affiliate WINK that troopers believe shots were fired, although the extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
The woman who was killed in the shooting worked for the city for 12 years and was a sanitation technician, police say.
Detectives believe the shooting was “domestic-involved.”
While today is a working day for city employees, officials could not confirm whether the woman was on the clock at the time of the shooting.
