TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Every summer since 2010, 4Quartersonline has hosted a media day for big bend football teams. A familiar face was missing this year, as co-founder Johnny Cofield passed away in June, but his impact on the game won’t soon be forgotten.
“Johnny Cofield was a walking almanac of Tallahassee [and] Big Bend high school football,” said Cofield’s 4Quartersonline co-founder, Marc Adams.
“He was a very humble man, he was very approachable,” said Munroe head coach Colby Roberts. “[He was] always willing to help schools, coaches and athletes out by going the extra mile.”
Another longtime local head coach in Florida High’s Jarrod Hickman agreed.
“[Cofield] made the Big Bend area better because he tried to promote young people,” said Hickman. “[He was] somebody that cared about high school football the right way.”
Promoting local student-athletes is exactly why Cofield and Adams started 4Quartersonline back in 2009.
“When we do 4Quarters online, when we do anything related to community, it’s not about what we do, it’s about who we do it for and who we’re doing it with,” said Adams.
The young stars who take part in the media day are given an opportunity that can help them past their high school years.
“The exposure to get here, the training on how to deal with the media, things along those lines,” said Roberts, on the importance of the media day. “So it’s not just strictly football, it’s helping to teach life lessons as well.”
Long before 4Quartersonline, Cofield was a Big Bend staple. He was a 1,000 yard rusher for Rickards in the 1970s, who then played college ball for Florida A&M. He later made his way to the sidelines to coach both the Raiders and FAMU DRS.
“Being able to do 4Quartersonline is basically leaning on that history and being able to bring it to life and actually allow people to write their own chapters,” said Adams.
It will feel different kicking off this high school season without him, but Adams says Cofield would want him to continue what they started together all those years ago.
“We just take his greatness, we break it apart and spread it among the people and our staff, we all carry a little bit of him in what we do,” he said.
“I’m proud of Marc [Adams], 4Quartersonline, and the whole team for continuing his legacy,” said Roberts.
