Brickell will have a new community playground.

Miami-Dade County officials broke ground on Play Spot, a new community space located along S.E. 5th Street under the Brickell Metromover station with a view of the Miami River.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins, who spearheaded the project, said the vibrant oasis playground will also feature lush shade trees and other landscaping features. Higgins is now in a runoff for the City of Miami Mayor’s job.

Higgins said Play Spot is the heart of Miami’s urban core where families can relax and enjoy the amenities and environment when the project is completed.

“The Play Spot is about creating joy in the middle of our city,” said Higgins. “Brickell is one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in Miami, but families surrounded by buildings and traffic deserve spaces to relax, play, and connect. With the Play Spot, we’re turning what was once an overlooked corner into a place filled with laughter, shade, and community. It’s one more step in making the urban core a place for everyone.”

The Play Spot project is a collaboration between Higgins, Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Miami Downtown Development Authority and community partners committed to reimagining public spaces for all residents.

“It’s a new place to play, right in the heart of Downtown Miami,” Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Director Christina White said. “What was once an underutilized space beneath the Metro Mover is now a vibrant new play spot for our community to enjoy. Thanks to all our partners for helping make our metropolitan city a little greener and more playful.”

The Play Spot is the third of three projects, along with the Dog Spot and the Connect Spot, Higgins championed to bring connection, recreation and green space to the community.
