‘I can’t believe it’: Port St. Lucie family displaced after fire reignites overnight
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
A family of nine in Port St. Lucie is without a home after a fire that began Wednesday morning reignited overnight, destroying their house on Crosspoint Drive.
Karleen Morgan, a mother and grandmother, was home with her family when she first noticed something unusual.
“I smelled smoke. I said to my nephew, ‘I smell smoke, you don’t smell?’ He said no,” Morgan said.
When she opened the garage door, she saw smoke pouring out.
“A lot of smoke coming from the garage,” she said.
Morgan believes the fire started in the attic. The St. Lucie County Fire District responded and extinguished the flames.
“It was not in flames; it was just smoke,” Morgan said.
However, the fire reignited overnight. A neighbor called 911 early Thursday morning after seeing flames.
Morgan described the emotional toll of the situation.
“I was crying and crying, and he said, ‘It’s OK, we got it, we got it.’ I was crying because the fire department came out, and then the fire started again. I can’t believe it,” she said.
The home is now considered a total loss, leaving Morgan and her family searching for temporary housing.
“I would like some help. Some help would be very appreciated. Everything costs money, and I’m not even working right now, so if I can get help, I would appreciate it,” she said.
Despite the devastation, no one was injured in the fire.
