911 callers describe crash that killed man at Pompano bus stop

In the aftermath of a crash along South Federal Highway in Pompano Beach on Tuesday afternoon, 911 callers described seeing a car flip over, someone lying on the ground and the significant damage left behind.

Just before 1 p.m., Jo Anne Llera, 47, was driving a 2024 BMW M240i south in the 500 block of South Federal Highway, where she was first in a rear-end crash with a 2017 Honda Accord, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release this week.

Llera drove around the Honda and continued south, reaching the 900 block where she then swerved onto a swale on the side of the road and hit a covered Broward County bus bench where the man had been either sitting or standing, the news release said.

After crashing into the bus stop, Llera hit two light poles, a tree and multiple empty cars in the lot of a dealership nearby, which damaged nine cars there, the Sheriff’s Office said. The impact of the crashes flung debris which hit a 2010 Lincoln Town Car as it was traveling on South Federal Highway.

One woman who called 911 told the operator she saw a man but could not tell if he had been ejected from a car or if he had been at the bus stop when he was hit. Deputies arrived moments later.

“She just flew right past me,” the woman told someone in the background of the call, released Thursday.

Another caller described that one of the cars involved had flipped over into the car dealership parking lot before it stopped right side up. One man who called 911 from near the Taverna Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Fort Lauderdale told an operator that someone was lying on the ground.

Deputies who responded to the crash scene pronounced the man dead there, according to BSO.

A representative of the BMW Response Center also called 911 to ask the operator for a “wellness check” of their customer whose location was recorded as just south of the dealership and bus stop.

“It just came in … from the car, that it’s been in some sort of accident,” the representative said.

The operator replied: “We have a call reference to a severe car crash at that location, with multiple vehicles involved.”

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took Llera to Broward Health North, and she was expected to recover. The Sheriff’s Office has not released an update on her condition as of Thursday.

Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating.
