The Key Biscayne Community Compost Program, run by A Zero Waste Culture, was launched in 2020 to divert food scraps and other organics from landfills, reduce methane emissions and create nutrient-rich soil.
Members collect food scraps during the week and bring them on Saturdays to the Farmers Market at Key Biscayne Community Church, 355 Glenridge Rd.
Below is the environmental impact of the Island’s composting efforts. These figures include compost materials collected from members through home pick-ups, as well as from our participating schools and businesses.
• 1,063 pounds of food scraps collected this past week
• 409,978 pounds collected so far, or 205 tons
• 133.24 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented from entering the atmosphere
That’s like:
• 338,437 miles driven
• 10.74 million smartphone charges
• 2,221 trees helping clean the air for 10 years
Note: The Key Biscayne Community Compost Program will be taking a 2-week summer break and will resume regular Farmers Market drop-offs on Saturday, Aug. 8. They will still be doing businesses and home pick-ups for those members who request it.
