Angie Nixon gains endorsements at Orlando rally ahead of Florida Senate primary
ORLANDO, Fla. —
Democrat Angie Nixon held a rally at a local union hall in Orlando Friday morning, less than four weeks before Florida’s primary election for U.S. Senate.
Progressive elected officials from Central Florida announced their support for Nixon during the event.
“She is going to take that fight to Washington, D.C., where we need it most right now,” said Congressman Maxwell Frost, D-Orlando.
Nixon, a state representative from Jacksonville, received endorsements from her colleagues in the Florida House — Anna Eskamani and LaVon Bracy Davis — as well as Frost. She is running against retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in the Democratic primary.
“If you’re ready to take back Florida for working people, for the average Floridian: Angie Nixon. Let’s get it done,” Frost said.
During the rally, Nixon outlined her platform, which includes raising the minimum wage to $25 an hour, universal child care, and Medicare for all. She also criticized corporations for avoiding federal taxes.
“We’re allowing 88 companies that made over $105 billion to not pay federal taxes. Meanwhile, there are people working day in and day out that made $50,000 that have to go into payment plans with the IRS. Say ‘Shame, shame,’ it’s time we make billionaires and big corporations pay what they owe,” Nixon said.
Both Nixon and Vindman are vying to challenge Florida’s Republican US senator, Ashley Moody, in November. A recent poll from the University of North Florida shows Moody leading both Democratic candidates, though Nixon appears to be the slightly stronger contender in a general election matchup.
The Vindman campaign released a statement about its momentum and plans to lower costs and fight corruption in Washington, D.C., “starting with banning Congressional stock trading.”
“Our campaign has now hosted more than 200 events in Florida, and Alex is honored to have earned the support of elected officials, community leaders, unions, and thousands of Florida voters who are ready to send Alex to the Senate this November,” the statement reads.
Vindman also announced new endorsements from U.S. senators Jack Reed and Tammy Duckworth. He has a significant fundraising advantage over Nixon, with out-of-state donors backing his campaign.
