Video: Tesla, Volkswagen involved in deadly crash in Tampa

WFLA, Fla. (WFLA) — Police have arrested a man in connection with a crash that left another man dead in early July.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the crash occurred the morning of July 2 on North Florida Avenue.

A blue 2022 Tesla was traveling “at a high rate of speed” northbound, and a 2024 Volkswagen was traveling southbound.

Investigators believe that as the Volkswagen attempted a left-hand turn into a local dealership, the Tesla collided with the Volkswagen’s passenger side, causing the vehicle to overturn.

The driver of the Volkswagen was critically injured and pronounced dead at the scene despite the arriving officers’ life-saving efforts.

The driver of the Tesla, identified as Luciano Ibarra, 20, was also injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Investigators determined that Ibarra was speeding at more than 100 mph moments before causing the crash.

Police arrested Ibarra on Friday for one count of vehicular homicide and one count of operating a vehicle at 100 mph or more.

The investigation is ongoing.
