Broward County, FL – Broward County Public Schools is equipping every school bus with AI-powered cameras as part of a new initiative aimed at reducing illegal passing violations and improving student safety.

The district announced that all 1,300 school buses will receive camera systems before students return for the 2026-27 school year.

Officials said the technology is designed to capture drivers who fail to stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and warning lights activated, which is a violation of Florida law.

A 30-day warning period will begin on August 10th, the first day of school.

During that time, motorists caught violating the law will receive warnings instead of citations.

Beginning September 9th, drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus could receive a $225 civil citation.

District officials said every potential violation recorded by the cameras will be reviewed by Broward County School Police before a citation is issued.

The camera system includes at least eight cameras on each bus, including AI technology that monitors surrounding traffic and license plate recognition cameras capable of identifying vehicles involved in violations.

School leaders said the program is intended to encourage drivers to follow traffic laws and help protect students as they board and exit buses.

According to the district, school bus drivers reported 1,244 illegal passing incidents during the 2025-26 school year across district-operated buses, charter schools and contracted transportation providers.

Officials said the camera equipment is being installed through a partnership with BusPatrol, which is covering the cost of the system.

Revenue generated from citations will fund the program, with a portion also supporting student safety initiatives throughout the district.
