TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – James Coleman has turned into a Tallahassee community hero in recent years. The former Florida State football standout has hosted givebacks for seven years.
On Saturday at Bond Elementary School, Coleman and several local young high schoolers gave out hundreds of school-supply-stuffed backpacks and groceries to local families in need.
He called on community volunteers to come out with smiles to assist in the giveaways, and he got his wish. Coleman emphasized the significance of those who came out to give their time and the importance of spreading positivity.
“One of the biggest things that I want people to take away from this is that we have some young black men out here that are giving,” said Coleman. “I see all of the stuff, I see people talking about these different things. I don’t know that to be true because the world that I’m in is positive. We make sure that we set the positive example. We make sure to poor into these guys. These young men could be anywhere on a Saturday a few weeks before school, but they’re out here making sure to give back to their community.”
Coleman confirmed that he will be back for an eighth year of givebacks next year. But this weekend isn’t done for him yet, on Sunday morning at FAMU DRS, Coleman hosts a football camp for kids ages six to 16. It will be a great way to learn some tips first hand from a Florida State great.
