TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Dozens of people came out Saturday for a community celebration in support of Derek Steele, son of the late civil rights activist C.K. Steele, who is now battling prostate cancer.
Steele’s daughter Raven Whitehead said the celebration was important. “To see people to come love on my papa, that means a whole lot,” Whitehead said.
Saturday’s event doubled as a fundraiser and birthday celebration for Steele. His family says he’s poured into so many people throughout his life, and they want to take time to recognize him for it.

“My uncle has always been there to say everyone is welcome under this tent,” Executive Director of the C.K. Steele Institute James Davis, Jr. said.
The proceeds from the fundraiser are meant to help with Steele’s stage four cancer diagnosis.
“Nobody wants to see their loved one go through cancer,” Whitehead said. “Taking care of him, I get to see that challenge every day. I get to see what he goes through every day. So, it’s not easy.”
