There is something very special about Key Biscayne. My husband and I had loved the island for years before we finally moved here in 2025. It didn’t take long to realize it’s so much more than a beautiful place to live, it’s a close-knit community where nature is part of everyday life.
During my morning walks on the beach, I became fascinated by the many marked sea turtle nests along the shoreline. Female sea turtles can travel thousands of miles to return to the very beaches where they hatched. There is something truly magical about that incredible journey, and it inspired me to become involved.
When the opportunity arose to volunteer as the Turtle Nest Adoption Coordinator with Friends of Cape Florida, I knew I wanted to help. Through our Turtle Nest Adoption Program, I connect families, local businesses and visitors with these remarkable conservation efforts by sharing the location and photos of their adopted nests so they can follow each nest’s story throughout the season.
This has already been an extraordinary year. So far, 102 sea turtles have come ashore to nest at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. That also means there are still many nests waiting to be adopted!

As a new mom, I feel incredibly lucky to be raising my son on Key Biscayne. I hope he grows up with the same love and appreciation for this island that we have and that, just like the sea turtles, he will always find his way back home.
