Juliet Isom
Miami Palmetto High School rising senior Juliet Isom won the Panthers of Distinction Award this past spring at the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. In past years she won the Core Values Award.
Isom is a dancer. She has earned the bulk of her community service hours teaching little girls aged four to seven how to dance for two years at summer dance camps.
“Dance camp was a mix of teaching girls how to dance and express themselves,” Isom says.
Isom herself danced for about ten years and was part of the Jill Mallory Dance Studio’s senior company.
“I enjoyed working with them,” she says. “It was fun seeing them every day. It was fun to find out what style of dance they liked and helping them express themselves.”
Isom pivoted from dance to concentrate on academics and school activities in her junior year. She’s on the school newspaper, starting out as the video editor and moving on to managing editor. In that capacity she ran the paper’s social media platform and ensured that the assigned stories were being worked on and turned in.
“I also had to make sure everyone knew what to do while managing the classroom environment,” she says. “I would make some quizzes to keep them up on the AP style.”
Now she’s the senior podcast editor.
“It’s a new position,” she says. “I have to come with the things I want.”
She plans on interviewing teachers for the podcast, taking a deep dive into who they are as people and what they do outside of the classroom. She also plans to interview students such as the student council president.
“I have good expectations for it,” she says. “I can’t wait. The form of a video podcast captures interest more than reading a story.”
The podcast begins with the new school year.
Isom is a member of the Health Information Project, where junior and senior students teach health modules to ninth graders. Isom says she really enjoyed her first year in the program.
“It was a really unique experience,” she says. “I feel HIP is so important to incoming students. It’s such a cultural shock. We’re creating an environment where students feel safe. I am interested in pursuing something in the medical field. This helps me navigate where I want to help people in real life.”
She believes the topics they teach resonate in different ways for each student.
“Every module is meant to be impactful,” she says. “On diet, on drug use. All are topics that a lot of kids might not feel comfortable looking into or talking about.”
She is a member of the National Honor Society and the social media manager for the Class of 2027 for a second year.
Her dance experience led Isom to become one of the choreographers for one of the biggest school events of the year, Panther Prowl.
“I don’t choreograph all the dances, but a good number,” she says. “It’s a team effort. We had over 100 students for our junior year. That’s why we need so many choreographers. So many people want to join. It has really helped my skill in handling big amounts of people.”
Her college application list currently includes the University of Florida, the University of North Carolina, Auburn University, the University of Tennessee and Miami University.
While not completely decided on a major, she is leaning toward the medical field, possibly pre-med for dermatology, nursing, or occupational therapy.
“I really want to help people feel like the best versions of themselves,” she says.
