Cape Coral’s 6,000-square-foot American flag was taken down for repairs just three weeks after it was unveiled at Bernice Braden Park, near the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge. City officials said an eyelet, or reinforced hole used to secure the flag, failed, leaving the flag damaged and unable to fly. A replacement flag has been ordered, but the city has not said whether repairs or replacement costs will be covered by taxpayers. The oversized flag, funded through private donations, became a local landmark when it was raised atop the city’s 250-foot flagpole on July 4, WINK News reports.
