While the three division races in the National League are all but decided, the three in the American League seem as if they’ll come down to the wire. Two of the three NL champs are likely to repeat, while all three current leaders in the AL would be snapping droughts of at least four seasons.
The Texas Rangers haven’t won the AL West since 2016, though they did win the World Series as a Wild Card team in 2023. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays haven’t won the AL East since 2021, finishing fourth in each of the past two seasons. Right now, the Rangers lead the division by two games and the Rays by 2.5 headed into the team’s series opener at 6:40 p.m. ET tonight.
Cal Quantrill will start the series opener tonight for Texas, and Griffin Jax will get the call for Tampa Bay.
Let’s break down this potential playoff preview with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays Best Bets
Under 8.5 (-119): Neither of these pitchers has particularly impressive advanced numbers, but both of them have solid standard stats that should be sustainable given the good defenses backing both up. Four of the Rays’ last five games have stayed under the total.
NRFI (-105): Jax has been at his absolute best against the top of the order, allowing just five earned runs in 16.0 innings in the opening frame. Quantrill has sustained plenty of damage, but opponents have only on him in the first innings in one of his five starts.
Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays prediction, preview
The AL West has been one of the tightest divisions in baseball all season, with each team (even the Los Angeles Angels!) briefly leading the division. The Rangers have been consistently around that mix, never leading by more than two games or trailing by more than three. In particular, Texas’ offense has taken huge strides from last season, as it ranks 12th in OPS, with veteran Joc Pederson and youngster Wyatt Langford holding OPS+ marks north of 140 and utilityman Ezequiel Durán emerging as one of baseball’s best. The Rangers have paired that with average pitching, as they’ve posted the 15th-best rotation ERA and the 19th-beset bullpen ERA. Despite Jacob deGrom’s finally starting to show some signs of his age, 2022 third overall pick Kumar Rocker has produced the best season of his career and Nathan Eovaldi has been solid. Additionally, closer Jacob Latz and set-up man Jakob Junis have been pretty sharp. Texas will look for another arm at the trade deadline, but it’s in a solid position to make the playoffs, even if it’s not a realistic contender.
By contrast, the AL East has been a two-team race, as the Rays have jockeyed with the New York Yankees for control of the division, with the rest of the division pretty far behind. Tampa Bay has had a couple of impressive stretches, including a 22-4 run near the beginning of the season and a nine-game winning streak shortly before the All-Star break, but it endured a 9-18 run in between. All in all, the Rays are well-positioned to keep up their winning ways, as they own the sixth-best offense in baseball courtesy of Junior Caminero (.914 OPS) and Yandy Díaz (.838). Additionally, Tampa Bay has had baseball’s fourth-best rotation, as Nick Martinez and Drew Rasmussen were both named All-Stars and both Shane McClanahan and Jax have been serviceable enough. The Rays do have a below-average bullpen, as they haven’t had enough depth around set-up man Kevin Kelly and closer Bryan Baker, but their relievers have been lights-out since the All-Star break (2.31 ERA in 39.0 innings). They’re likely to go all-in at the trade deadline, as they’re even an under-the-radar team in the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes.
The Rangers should be in a fine position with Quantrill on the mound. Though he doesn’t always provide much length, pitching three innings of bulk relief in his most recent outing, he’s been solid enough, pitching to a 4.05 ERA and tossing six innings of one-run ball on July 10. Advanced stats paint a mixed picture, as though he has just a 22nd-percentile expected ERA and a 29th-percentile expected batting average, he has his strengths. Quantrill doesn’t issue many walks, an asset against a Tampa Bay team that has walked at an above-average rate, and he has a top-quartile mark in hard-hit rate, which should further stymie the Rays, who have the softest-hitting lineup in baseball. While he’s really struggled to generate whiffs or strikeouts, no pitcher can be expected to do that against contact-oriented Tampa Bay, and Texas’ fielders are above-average, so they should be able to back him up. The location splits aren’t in his favor, given how much better the Rays have been at home, but some modest success (say, four or five innings and one or two earned runs) wouldn’t be a huge shock.
Tampa Bay is also opting for a converted reliever. 294 of Jax’s 326 career appearances have come out of the bullpen, but he joined the Rays’ rotation at the end of April, first working as an opener and then as a more stretched-out, five-inning option. Since becoming a starter, Jax has posted a solid 3.38 ERA, and Tampa Bay has won nine of his 16 starts. As with Quantrill, his advanced numbers are mixed, as he ranks in the bottom quintile in both expected ERA and expected batting average, but he, too, has his strengths. In particular, Jax has done an excellent job incentivizing chases and whiffs, ranking in the top septile in both stats, which should exacerbate the Rangers’ issues. Additionally, he’s been pretty good at generating grounders, and Texas hits grounders at a slightly above-average rate. While his 13th-percentile barrel rate could be a problem, the Rangers haven’t connected solidly very often, and when he keeps it in the ballpark, he has the better fielders behind him. Additionally, Jax has been slightly better at home, and Texas has very consistent splits regardless of location.
Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays pick, best bet
Best Bet: Under 8.5 (-119)
While I expect the Rays to ultimately win this game, their odds on the Moneyline (-181) are far too short to provide much value. However, if their improved bullpen is legitimate, Jax is reliable enough and the Rangers’ offense average enough to keep this game under the total.
Strong Lean: NRFI (-105)
The risk here is that Quantrill has to pitch to Caminero, but Jax has a 76 sOPS+ in the first inning, allowing an OPS 24% lower than the league average in the opening frame. Similarly, Quantrill has escaped the first inning clean in four of his five starts.
