WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — South Florida’s biggest weather story today won’t be thunderstorms—it will be the dangerous heat.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the east coast metro, including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s, but high humidity will make it feel between 106 and 110 degrees during the hottest part of the day.

Limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or the shade, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, even without record temperatures.
Rain chances will be much lower than recent days as another plume of Saharan dust and drier air settles over South Florida. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are still expected this afternoon, but the greatest coverage will be near Lake Okeechobee, where slightly deeper moisture remains in place.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, any storm that develops could produce brief heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and gusty winds. Because steering winds remain weak, slow-moving storms may also lead to isolated instances of urban or poor-drainage flooding.
Boaters and beachgoers should also be prepared for hazardous conditions. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the Atlantic offshore waters this afternoon as winds increase. Anyone visiting the beach should swim only near a lifeguard and stay out of the water if red flags are flying.
