(July 29, 2026) — As we prepare for the start of a new school year, the Cape Coral Police Department is reminding drivers that RedSpeed school zone speed cameras will be active and enforcing speed limits when school resumes on August 11.

The cameras are designed to improve safety for students, parents, crossing guards, and school staff by encouraging drivers to slow down in school zones.

School zone speed cameras are active only on school days. Posted signs at each school identify the times when the school zone is active.

Under Florida law, drivers traveling more than 10 mph over the posted school zone speed limit while the cameras are active are subject to a $100 Notice of Violation issued to the vehicle’s registered owner. For example, traveling 31 mph in a 20 mph school zone while the zone is active would result in a violation.

Every potential violation captured by the RedSpeed camera system is reviewed by a law enforcement officer or traffic infraction enforcement officer before a Notice of Violation is issued.

Camera Operation Times:

School zone speed cameras are active only on school days:

30 minutes before the start of school.During school hours.30 minutes after school dismissal.

Important:

When school zone lights are flashing, the reduced speed limit is enforced. When lights are not flashing during school hours, the regular posted speed limit applies.

In both cases, drivers who exceed the applicable limit by more than 10 MPH will receive a violation.

What Happens If You Receive a Violation Notice?

You have three options to respond:

Pay the violation.Submit an affidavit explaining an exception to liability as provided under Florida Statute 316.1896.Request a hearing.
