Man arrested in ‘execution-style’ Orange County killing indicted on murder charge
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
A man accused in an “execution-style” murder during an armed robbery nearly 14 years ago at an Orange County restaurant has been formally indicted, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
Calvin Washington, 34, was already behind bars when he was arrested last month in connection with the September 2012 murder. He’s serving a 30-year prison sentence after having beaten his girlfriend and stabbed his neighbor in Ocala, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Ying Jie Sun, 53, was shot and killed on Sept. 26, 2012, at the former China Wok restaurant in Pine Hills. Investigators said she didn’t understand a masked gunman’s demands when he and another suspect burst into the restaurant, adding the robbers made away with less than $100.
Washington had been named a person of interest shortly after the shooting, but detectives said just last month they used DNA technology to secure an arrest warrant for him, tying him to the killing through clothing, gloves, and money collected during the investigation.
Washington has now been formally indicted for second-degree murder with a firearm, according to information filed by the State Attorney’s Office on July 21. His next court date is an arraignment hearing scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3.
