Why spend all the money required to change the name of Broward County?

What a ridiculous idea.

Think of the hidden costs — letterheads, websites, office buildings, business cards and county vehicles, for starters. On top of all that is the need to market the name change itself.

Why waste our tax dollars on a name change that would likely have little effect on tourism?

Besides, the county name is not what draws tourists.

Can you name the county of other great American cities? Is the county’s name what attracts you to Chicago or New Orleans or San Francisco?

Save the money and spend it on infrastructure or keeping cities clean. Spend money to build great destinations. Spend money to preserve history and green space.

We have so many other needs that could be helped with a more thoughtful use of tax dollars.

Leave Broward alone

I say no to the rebranding of Broward County.

The tax dollars that would have to be spent on this idea make it foolish.

But if the name change does go forward, perhaps they should let Sheriff Gregory Tony lead the charge and direct the re-naming transition.

Tony seems to be well-versed in name, image and likeness.

This is one more great idea on how to waste my tax dollars.

To our state legislators, please focus on our infrastructure and ideas to improve our quality of life.

Chip LaMarca’s Folly
House District 100 in coastal Broward.

floridaredistricting.org

House District 100 in coastal Broward.

State Rep. Chip LaMarca does not represent most people in Broward.

His District 100 incorporates only the eastern coastal strip where the well-heeled, from Rio Vista north to the Palm Beach line, are ensconced.

Renaming Broward County after the city where many of his Republican supporters live presents serious concerns.

Will the two taxpayer-funded county hospital districts be renamed North Lauderdale and South Lauderdale?

What about the name of the public school district?

Will South Broward High School (my alma mater) become South Lauderdale High?

You can see where I’m going.

Where did this idea come from? It likely came from someone other than the go-along-to-get-along and term-limited Chip LaMarca.

A frivolous diversion

Changing the name “Broward County” to “Lauderdale County” is simply a joke, as I am opposed to doing away with more than 100 years of history.

To city and county officials who favor this change, I say to you all: Get a life and start focusing on what’s important to residents. There’s plenty.
