Central Florida mother calls for justice after 17-year-old daughter is shot, killed
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
A mother is calling for justice after the death of her 17-year-old daughter.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office identified Skyler Bradford as the teenager who died after being shot on Wednesday. Her death is still being investigated.
“I just want to know why,” Bradford’s mother, Rodnesha Speed, said. “I don’t know how to move on from this, but I will make sure that she gets the justice that she deserves.”
Here’s what we know happened. Sheriff deputies responded to an apartment complex off Old Cheney Highway around 5 p.m. on Wednesday for a reported shooting. Detrakerian Conyers, who lives close by, heard it happen.
“I just heard, boom, boom, boom,” he said. “When I came back outside later, there were cop cars everywhere.”
Deputies found Bradford, but she later died at the hospital. The sheriff’s office told WESH 2 all parties stayed at the scene after the shooting.
“The investigation is still in its early stages, and we have no further information to release at this time. We will provide additional updates as they become available,” a statement from the sheriff’s office reads.
“It breaks my heart that I couldn’t be there for her,” Speed said.
Speed wants her daughter to be remembered for her love and her humor. She said Bradford graduated high school early and worked at a nursing home. Speed said her daughter was set to start college in the coming weeks.
“She was just a happy teenager who was a go-getter,” Speed said.
It remains unclear if a suspect has been taken into custody.
