Phoenix Fire Department has responded to 129 mountain rescue calls so far in 2026, 21 more than at the same point last year. Firefighters say extreme heat can drive up summer rescues, but emergencies happen year-round. Crews are also responding to medical emergencies and hikers who become stuck on trails. A family was rescued from Mummy Mountain on Wednesday after a hiker realized they needed help. Trails on Camelback, Piestewa and parts of South Mountain remain closed during the day through Monday because of the heat.
